Anna Kingsford

Kingsford was a 19th Century visionary and dreamworker, with extraordinary recall and clarity. She endured slurs and snubs in medical school to became only the second female doctor in England. Her experiences in labs of that time converted her to vegetarianism; she became an activist for the anti-vivisectionist and animal rights movements. She lived and died her ideals: never robust, she died of pneumonia probably caught by protesting outside Louis Pasteur's laboratory in a cold rainstorm.

She's one of the roots of New Age mysticism, and a lot steelier than her flabby descendents. In her view, our three great sins are: sexism (and suppression of intuition), fundamentalism (and faith itself, instead of direct mystical experience), and violence (stemming, she thought, from the belief we're mere animals--pure matter).

Kingsford wrote two books of dreams and visions:

Her books directly influenced the Order of the Golden Dawn, Yeats and the Celtic Renaissance. Through them, Kingsford indirectly shaped today's New Age movement, Wicca and Goddess-worship as well.
