Ithell (Eye-thell not Ith-ell) Colquhoun (1906-88), was a painter who managed to be thrown out of the English Surrealists--impressive achievement!--for practicing witchcraft. She serenely went on painting, writing weird poetry, and studying occultism for half a century, from the flapper era to the resurgence of New Age and feminist interest in Wicca in the sixties and seventies, then the eighties as rationalists started their long clampdown.

Richard Shillitoe, editor of the best book on her dreamwork and occultism, Medea's Charms, found most of this work undated, so the chronology here is rougher than usual. And this list doesn't give a fair sample of her artistic range--her strongest stuff is her paintings, and almost none depict dreams.

One dream on the list isn't Colquhoun's but mine, about her.

	SCYLLA: by Ithell Colquhoun, 1938 daydream-painting; it inspired a 1996/7/15 dream by Wayan. Colquhoun, a surrealist, was in the tub. Saw the soap as a boat and her thighs as rocks. She painted it so shipwreck looks like sex. Wayan, decades later, dreamt of a similar scene and draws it, only then noticing it echoes this painting he'd seen in childhood... CAUTION: IMPLIED SEX
