At Night Things Come to Me

Dreamed 1980 or before by Nellie Mae Rowe

Nellie Mae Rowe was a folk artist in Georgia in the 1970s and 80s. Like Grandma Moses, most of her art dates to her old age, after she'd retired. She had to work through most of her childhood, so she explicitly wanted to play with art like the kid she'd never gotten to be. I think she achieved that freedom.

While a lot of her work's just as surreal as this (and has similar themes--weird dogs (are those wings?), giant birds and flowers, and strange looking women) this was Rowe's only piece out of hundreds whose title implied it was dream-inspired.
