BLOODY STYX!

34K, 640 x400, 1989. Digital painting by Chris Wayan.

Not a dream image, though it looks like one; just an sudden vision that came to me, of a rickety framework oozing blood, rising from warm misty water...

The Styx, in Greek myth, is the river between the land of the living and the dead. Why there are sticks in the Styx, and whose blood that is, I don't think I want to know.

rising from warm, misty water, a structure of sticks, dripping blood
I was surprised, when I painted it, how peaceful it looked. Fertile blood, not death. Menstrual, maybe? Is this how a womb sees itself?
