Creation of the Birds

Painted 1957 by Remedios Varo

This is Varo's best-known work, and you can see why. The benevolence of the owl-woman is palpable, and there's a weird charm about the idea of the bird-creator being half bird herself.

Many of Varo's other works are just as gorgeous and strange, with textures and subtle colors that somehow look both ancient and futuristic; but most of her other figures have grayish even greenish skin and either absent expressions or crazed stares. They're locked in their otherworlds, apart from you. But you can sense that the Creator of the Birds would welcome you in.
