Hunger

Dreamed (1970s?) by Robert Creeley

[I was] at a classic sixties long table with lots of others, all eating out of a great bunch of pots filled with various stews along with bowls of rice.

Finally, we seemed to have eaten everything and there had been a lot--yet there were still people yelling for more. I remember turning to the woman next to me and asking, "how come these people are still hungry after all the food we've eaten?"

"Ah," she said, "we were hungry and so we could be fed! But they, they are possessed with the idea of hunger and so they can never get enough."

I carried that dream for years as a talisman against confusion and obsessive desire.
