Recurring dreams, 1967?-69? by Bob Kathman
AFTERNOTE
This is one of four recurring dreams recalled by Bob Kathman, cartooned for A Flock of Dreamers: a Comics Anthology.
This dream stood out for me for two reasons, one simple, one complex.
- I've often read of this dream image--an infinite corridor of doors to diverse worlds--either dreams, or past lives, or other people's minds. Yet I've never dreamt it myself, nor met any other dreamer who has. I got used to thinking it was a myth. But Bob's account is first-hand and unmistakable.
- What does the image mean? My closest parallel dream is Red-Spattered Dancers. In it, I too climbed up ladders in a playground, and found vaginal tunnels and slides, where under-age kids danced half-naked, spattered with red paint--not blood, definitely paint. The sexual innuendo paralleled Kathman's dream, but that paint-dance really baffled me! Until, next day, I saw the TV show Wednesday--Wednesday Addams goes to her prom, and pranksters spatter her with... no, not blood, this isn't Carrie. Just red paint. So that high viewpoint where I saw dancers spattered in red paint was shamanic dreaming, looking ahead in time!
Consider Bob's dream in that light. The womb he climbs up into isn't only sex; it's shamanic dreaming, where he finds doors to endless dreams--maybe his own future dreams, maybe others'. The sexual trespass as he climbs up under the skirt of the giant girl suggests to me the rooms may be the latter--he's trespassing inside others' dreaming minds.
A sample of two proves little. But that's my best guess. (And if you've dreamt of this corridor, email me! I want more examples!)
A third: Barbara Heninger's Corridor.
