I dreamed I was drowning in the Sea of Time, where dragons asked me questions. PAINFUL questions... but I didn't regret the visit, for as the painting says, "really useful pain is not all that easy to come by."

This is a first sketch of a 1989 dream that frankly I think was too complex and intense for my skills at the time; it haunted me for years till I painted and told it more fully (and I think more successfully) as AMERICAN TANKA.
