Vision Rouge (Red Apparition)

Painted 1984 by Leonor Fini

This is a late painting by surrealist Fini, done at age 77, looking back to her childhood--but instead of sentimentalizing, she confronts puberty and loss of innocence. She described it as "a monster appearing out of the flames to a real person who is afraid of it. She is becoming an adult. Perhaps she is me."

When I first saw this, I didn't see fire, but menstrual blood--puberty--and then red autumn leaves--a child having a vision of the autumn of her life (and a prescient vision: age 77 really was autumn, not yet winter. Fini lived another twelve years, as her friends and lovers died one by one.)

--Chris Wayan--

"I don't paint to calm. The paintings are disturbing; I know it. All imaginative people are fearful. All is fugitive and everything makes you afraid."
