Peter S. Beagle

Dreams inspired or provoked by writer Peter S. Beagle; many, by his signature fantasy The Last Unicorn. If you haven't read him, Beagle's Song may be the place to start: a nondream comparison of his (evolving) worldview and my own dream-guided shamanism. Not so different! A disciplined literary imagination can capture the experience of real magic.

One or two dreams below star Beagle, like the bizarre Bagging Peter Beagle, or Overwhelmed Yosemite Dad, in which he's fused with science fiction writer Samuel Delany!

RELATED TOPICS: Unicorns - other fantasists inspiring a lot of dreams: Tolkien of course, JK Rowling, Diana Wynne Jones, Ursula Le Guin & Patricia McKillip book-inspired dreams in general - See also the full INDEX OF SUBJECTS.

BAGGING PETER BEAGLE: by Wayan, 2017/7/7, a predictive little nightmare of manslaughter-guilt
Drunk, I fight writer Peter Beagle. He falls. Out cold. I wake sure I'm a killer...
Next day I read Ellen Klages's Passing Strange. Its climactic scene is curiously familiar...
BEAGLE'S SONG: by Wayan; 1994/1/18, essay on Peter Beagle's work.
Beagle's fantasies, from The Last Unicorn to The Innkeeper's Song, closely resemble
my dreams. The ways we differ say more about our spiritual orientation than about our art...
BLACK MAGIC: by Wayan; 1986/11/10, a dream of love and rage;
Chapter 8 of UNICORN TAG, though it can stand alone.
A packet of magic soupmix sends me upstairs to a secret wizards' lab.
They've summoned a demon they can't handle: the furious Black Unicorn...
JASHA EXPLAINS DEATH: by Wayan; ca. 1974/10/1; a 10-page painted comic with recurrent dream figures
Deep Duck's interview with Jasha the Krelkin goes rogue, as she urges tossing out human habits like... death?
CAUTION: REDWOOD-SPRITE SEX, PEEING ON TREES, DRUNK DUCK
KRELKIN: by Wayan; 1974/10/9, on nonhuman figures recurring in dreams
My psychology professor insists that nature spirits faded away as science rose.
But I still dream of krelkins! Jasha is the one I know best...
OVERWHELMED YOSEMITE DAD: by Wayan; 1998/9/25, a warning dream.
Mom's vanished, and our writer/bohemian dad's caring for us
alone now. But he's barely coping. And he's me...
SHOVED OFF A CLIFF: by Wayan; 2017/9/7, a nightmare-warning (I'd asked what to do next).
Atop a sea-cliff, I meet a young couple in love. One look at me and they
push me off! When I see I can't save myself, I try to take them with me...
CAUTION: NIGHTMARE BARING UGLY TRUTHS
TRICERATOPS, or, THE GUY WHO SCRIPTS MY DREAMS: by Wayan, 1982/8/24; a dream on dreams
Stuck in a horror movie, I get to meet the triceratops-headed monster
who scriptwrites all my nightmares. But he's open to suggestions...
UNICORN ROUND: by Wayan; 2000/9/18, nondream; acrylic on a vinyl record.
Yellow fireflies circling round the horn of a reclining red unicorn, in the evening...
THE WHITE DEER, RE-ENACTED: by Wayan; 2009/3/2, a parabolic dreampoem.
I'm living in an England rendered in chalk. We wander the woods with butterfly nets,
ritually hunting the White Deer--if that's what they really are...
