Kathleen Jenks

Here are dreams from Journey of a Dream Animal by Kathleen Jenks. Most of them are from 1963, when she read first read Jung, and started facing that an unrelenting barrage of dreams was warning her she was in love with a charismatic bad boy--though she clung to her denial for years! These are grouped below as The Rob Dreams.

I identify with her long struggle out of abuse. In the late 1970s, I fell for a batterer. My dreams warned me too, but it took me several years (about as long as Jenks) till I quit trying to fix things and escaped--shaky, sick, with a broken nose, but alive.

This is do-it-yourself dreamwork. Jenks couldn't afford therapy, and her dreams warned against it anyway--probably wise in sexist, Freudian 1963! Even if she'd found a Jungian, most of their dream interpretation (like Sheila Moon's Dreams of a Woman--elegant but oddly distant) skirt uncomfortable, awkward, personal facts (like a horrible job and worse boyfriend) to safe, impersonal archetypes or the collective unconscious. I think her interpretations still get a bit over-Jungian where I'd be more literal, but over all, DIY served her well. She's proof, if proof is needed, that self-therapy really does work.

One dream here, Ruby in my Pouch, isn't Jenks but my own dream-reaction to reading her journal.
