Recurring dreams 1920-22? by Dorothea Tanning, painted 1947

"Have you ever dreamed you could fly? I have often had this dream."

EDITOR'S NOTE

Tanning's comment is unusual. She often paints about dreams--you could argue half her career was about showing girls' and womens' dreams that get distorted, denied or just plain ignored by patriarchal society--even Surrealists. But she rarely painted specific dreams of her own. Maybe she made an exception because it was a recurring dream and a universal theme. Though her take on it is distinctly Tanning.
