This is an excerpt from cartoonist/illustrator David Small's graphic autobiography, Stitches. His parents ignored the lump on his neck for three and a half years because "doctors cost money"; at last, at 14, David's just had two operations leaving him nearly voiceless. His parents told him was just a cyst. It was cancer and they knew it. But he doesn't--not yet. Not consciously.
