Healing from Abuse and Trauma

Dreams about abuse and healing from abuse: molestation, battering, child neglect, political or racial persecution, torture, war crimes...

Abused people often play with the fire that burned them--in their dreams and in their lives. That's not necesssarily self-destructive, though it may look like it to others. Just re-enact it safely, and don't lose your self-respect. If you relive it enough you'll get a sense of control, put it past you, and stop. The challenge is to come through this phase alive, uninfected, and unaddicted. Only possible if you don't write yourself off as ruined and give up trying to protect yourself--and that's hard in America at least, where a Puritan tradition tends to write off every prostitute, drug user, crazy beggar, criminal, child molester, batterer, politician and telemarketer as hopelessly damned. But you're not--unless you give up!

I believe acting out the dramas of abuse in your dreams is just as effective as acting them out on the street, in bars, in bad marriages... and a lot safer! This is a reason to welcome shameful, even degrading dreams! Stand up for yourself in such dreams as if they're real, and be glad you're merely miserable.

Because you're working things through. It's the numb people who are stuck.
