A Knightly View

Dreamed 2019/2/12 by Chris Wayan

Damn this boom--from the City it's spread
through the past-burbs to medieval gloom.
Gold cranes like siege engines loom
over castles gray as the barrowed dead.

Times jostle, jar, surreal. Cranes are
here not quite construction gear;
lords have adapted steel mantises for
Dark Age needs: to mount knights! For

armor's now fist-thick--must deflect
deadly new shot. Knights, tanked up,
get craned into saddle; or, for the deft,
to towercrowns, to rain fire-arrows down.

I'm no knight, but this lord lets me loft.
Squires bolt me in borrowed boilerplate
meant for meat mountains. Strange.
Canned Chris. Humming dragon-crane

lifts me in jaw. But not to saddle, no mere
two yards. Past wall, tower, flagpole, more!
Scared, helpless--one crane-slip, and soar
turns plummet. No; gaze beyond fear.

Oh, the green miles! Horizon smiles,
and sprawls--a purring past. And fore.
