Lost Opal

Dreamed before 1961 by Anonymous #27

... a young couple in New York City... had gone to a theater, in which, at the time, round or oval cushions designed to hold men's hats were attached to the floor under each seat. After the theater, this couple stopped at a candy store for an ice cream soda. Suddenly, with a cry of dismay, the young woman saw that the stone, a sky-blue opal, was missing from her ring.

"It was a matrix stone and black on the underside," she says. "My husband had never examined my ring. We had never talked about it, and I know he did not know it was black underneath. The stone is fairly large, an oval one. A quarter would cover its smaller diameter but would leave half-moons at each end. I was heartbroken at the loss, and my husband was very sorry to see that I cared so much.

"Well, the next morning before breakfast he said he was going out for a short time. When I asked what for, he said he would tell me when he came back. In about three-quarters of an hour he came back and placed my opal before me on the breakfast table.

"He said, 'I had a dream. I saw a large, round, black thing and lying next to it a small, round, black thing; and I thought of those hat cushions in the theater. Something inside of me said, "Go there," and I did. I had our seat checks; a cleaning woman let me in; and there, as in my dream, the two black things were side by side. I picked up the small black object and was greatly surprised to see that it was blue on top and black underneath. I did not know it had a black back.'"
