I'm hiking in the Sierra Nevada, maybe 2 kilometers up, through a grove of giant sequoias. Peering up at one, I wonder--can the tree look back? I suspect it does have a picture of the world it lives in! After all, a fly manages to assemble a navigable 3D world from a few thousand little lenses; but a sequoia has millions of light detectors--that's what each needle is. They lack lenses, but each leaf surface knows where light comes from--and doesn't. A crude directional antenna. Multiply by millions...

At the least, a sequoia should be able to see big long-lasting objects blocking sunlight, like neighboring mountains--and neighboring sequoias.

Humans? Come on! We're gnats. Too ephemeral for a sequoia to even notice.
