The Road to Heaven

Dreamed 1987/5/12, 14x17" watercolor by Chris Wayan

I have recurring dreams of this winding sky-path--the Rem Road I travel every night, from flesh up to spirit, earth to stars.
watercolor of a road through the sky
Stunning views--as always--but tonight tne sky-road's carpeted in leaves, paper and junk from some huge festival. And atop this urban leafmold, it's practically paved with the bodies of children, unconscious or dead. There are skateboards, so I assume this was a multi-board pile-up.

I’m appalled, and unsure what to do. Are they dead? Do they need ambulances? Could vehicles even make it up this far? I run lower down and finally start meeting other hikers and ask, but no one knows anything, and the dream trails off into confusion.

But when I wake, I'm not confused. I know why that dream was dark. Today I took a class in contact improv dance, and we became little kids again--but only in spirit. Our bodies weren't limber, little and light! Fun crashing around, but falling hurts more than when I was five; I took too many risks, too many hits. As I write, I'm counting bruises.
