Turner's Recurring Dreams

Recurrent dreams, 1991-92, by Jack Turner

Since my mother's death the world had become a She. Among the many aspects of this change was a recurring dream of

being a teenage girl who had survived an Apocalypse:
I rode a tame bull elk named Me;
the roads in Jackson Hole were lined with stalled cars filled with decomposed bodies;
the Snake River, as viewed from the Snake River Overlook, was arrayed with funeral ghats like those at Pashupatinath outside Katmandu;
the only humans left were teenage children and three old women, aged versions of three women I loved;
when one of them died all the animals in our valley began to scream and I awoke in nightmare;
the teenage boys were sterile and did not smell right;
I fished the Snake River on a sunny day bare-breasted and was extremely proud of my breasts;
I bowed to human bones stuck in the roots of washed away cottonwood trees, saying in a dream language I called Kesh (the language of Ursula Le Guin's Always Coming Home) but in this world is an old Pali passage from my Buddhist practice: "Sanamsambudhassa."
I felt inundated by the feminine and it was not pleasant.

SOURCE: Northern Lights, 1994, Vol X #1, p.11-12. The source article is Mountain Lions by Jack Turner, and while it's far too long to post, and off-topic, it's extremely powerful. I recommend the whole thing. I offset the dream and added line breaks; it's all one endless sentence on the page.
