WINGVOW

1994 digital collage by Chris Wayan

Here's an incantation to induce flying dreams. "Bring me wings NOW, or forever hold your peace." I know it sounds a bit arrogant--kind of like the Wizard of Oz yelling "Bring me the broomstick of the Witch of the West!", or Gollum in the Lord of the Rings, offered fish and chips: "Bring me fish NOW, and keep nasssty chips!" But it works. Try saying it every night for a week or two. You'll fly.

This collage is the visual equivalent of the mantra; it reminds me to fly. I snipped fliers out of other dream-paintings, and pasted them all into one mad butterfly flock. That's why such intense clashing colors, and why the file's so big for the picture's dimensions. Shrink it or let it blur at all and it all turns to confusion.

Well, maybe it's already confusion.

Still, try the mantra thing. It works for lucid dreaming too. Just insist, as you fall asleep, that you're going to do it... and, surprisingly soon, you will.
