Popeye, the 1930s cartoon character, is the archetypal American working-class man--pugnacious, direct, good-hearted, and superhumanly strong... as long as he eats his vegetables. As a designated egghead, I was taught to fear and loathe everything Popeye stood for... but when I discovered the original comic strips by Elzie Segar, I found them quietly poetic, full of an odd blend of lowlife and fantasy--quite unlike the later TV cartoons. I found... I LIKED Popeye. It was middle-class people who were mean.

And so I started to dream of Popeye--meeting him, becoming him on occasion. A sort of shamanic familiar. Though copyrighted, of course.
