Bear Troubles
Dreamed 2007/3/29 by Wayan
We're bears. Intelligent, literate bears, living in brushy northern country. Harsh winters here. We have to hibernate for several months.
But our caves aren't safe. Every winter we're attacked. Along with the blizzards, polar bears come down from the northern wastes, sniff out our lairs, pry their way in and try to kill us in our sleep. Though we tend to wake and fight back! But they're starving, so they risk it.
And for a long time we just tried to (sorry) bear it. Treated it as inevitable. An individual problem. Hide well, sleep light, and fight if you're awakened.
But now, my generation is finally sick of it. We're starting to think "How can we fight them off on a mass scale, not individually? Could we go after them?"
NOTES IN THE MORNING
Hike with my friends Brenda and Alder in Pacifica. Mist, burning off. Walk up the canyon in San Pedro Park. Lush spring grass; deer all over, fearless. The end of the trail is a loop round a grass circle, inside a wall of willow and brush. Sit on a bench at the edge of the brush and watch the wildlife--deer, rabbits, vultures, joggers.
Why's this brush look so familiar? Oh. My bear dream last night!
And at that moment, Brenda says "I wonder--are there bears around here?"
