Dill

Dreamed 1988/9/9 by Wayan

The old men meet by the main fountain in the mall
Sundays. Italian, so the cops surveil them all.

The DA tips us reporters off to a raid. But why
that flock of labcoats? Who made that call?

A hand dips in my pocket. Wallet, farewell!
Too petty for the Mob--I bet a starving sociol-

ogy grad. A stealthy hand (or toe) then slips a fol-
ded document unto my left shoe. 'Pon my sole!

A third paw gropes me clandestine--I wait a while
for more, as Kissinger ordained--a Decent Interval.

Police scowl--I glare back. I'm press, I won't retreat!
At last the cop eyes drop; I amble, stall to stall

To the west fountain japonaise. Sit rim, and pull
off my left shoe and peer. Courteously returned are all

my credit cards, identity and cash! Unlace the right:
one thin slice of dollar-green... pickle. Wide and dill.

"I hoped for a deeper message" I grumble to the gold
koi, and wake up humbled. Pickle-pocketed, that's all.

I find a slice of pickle in my shoe. Dream sketch by Wayan. Click to enlarge.

1988 NOTES

I look for meaning in my dreams. This dream fights back! A shaggy-dog dream deliberately climaxing in a silly pun. That's not a pattern read into random brain-static, not memory sorting, not a test-run to solve a problem, not a repressed urge, not a numinous archetype, not a message from the gods...

Other dreams may be all those--who knows? But this dream means Let's poke fun at the over-earnest dream researcher.

Fear not. Your dreams would never mock you.

2022 NOTE

I wrote this at a poetry workshop; the leader, Catshall, wanted us to try ghazals--couplets that each end with a recurring rhyme then a recurring word (an exact match)--"you again", "blue again", "shoe again"; in the first and last couplets, both lines should have the motif. AA, BA, CA, DA, EA, AA. Instead, Dill came out. All wrong. Oh well!
