Graverol's Dream

Dreamed & painted 1974 by Jane Graverol

Jane Graverol started out as a realist painter but by the late 1930s was a full-on surrealist. I was unable to find any details about the dream provoking this painting--just the year (late in her career) and the title--the frustratingly ubiquitous and unrevealing Dream.

The sun in eclipse over bare mountains and clouds forms the pupil of a gigantic eye, gazing at two fliers--left, a long-necked bird fused with a long-stem flower, and, right, a horse whose mane becomes... are those axolotl gills? branching coral? whaaat?

Such fusions and visual puns aren't unique to this dream piece; her nondream paintings often have quite similar imagery--an elephant whose trunk is a swan's neck, etc.
