Nondream fantasy painted 1947-1962 by Clovis Trouille
The Surrealists saw Clovis as one of their own--the sort who's getting revenge for years of Catholic school. Only a few of his paintings and collages are labeled dreams; this one's not, but I just had to include it. I saw "Mon Tombeau" as a teen, and laughed as I cringed. I still do. BatNun on the phone does it every time.
Some details:
- The tombstone on the right is hard to read, but I think it translates "Here lies the painter who lost his life to gain it".
- Below that, the only girl in the graveyard
with no nasty habits (oops, sorry, let's just say "the Non-Nun") is having her own little bat-orgy atop another sepuchre--the tomb of Sacher-Masoch, for who masochism is named.
- The bats all have round Micky Mouse ears.
- The lower right, a sarcophagus containing a huge mossy vagina, is inscripted NI DIEU NI MAITRE, "No god nor master".
- On the left... I'm sure there's a sound ideological reason (laid out in the Surrealist Manifesto) for the skillet with two fried eggs. And the lizard. I mean, every orgy needs...
This painting and Trouille's equally raucous collages prove that Camp dates back way before the sixties and seventies. He began this while France was still cleaning up the rubble from World War Two--a generation before the Rocky Horror Show. Or Batman.
I'm not saying Clovis was unique--Dalí, even this early, was equally, gleefully blasphemous.
