NOT A THING

Dreamed 1981/3/1 by Chris Wayan

I'm arguing with an activist who's says she's oppressed by some injustice that's "gone on for years. It's worse for me than anyone, YOU wouldn't understand..."

At last I get lose patience and say "You forget I was a SLAVE for twelve years! Property! A THING!"

"Well, but that's all you ARE." she says calmly.

I get furious. I'm not letting her get away with that! I follow her through the house all night in my dream, yelling "I-AM-NOT-A-THING!"

And I'm still not sure it sank in.

AMORAL:

The next time you're inclined to dismiss inner urges or voices as irrational, consider this. Freud saw these inner voices as blind forces--only the ego having true consciousness. What if they think the same of you? What if they don't even see you as a person, just an annoying set of stupid habits?

Plenty of people didn't see you as a real person. Why assume your own mind always does? You can't have a dialog with someone who thinks you're a robot or slave or doorstop.

You may have to yell or break things to get your mind's attention. Because it may not see itself as yours. Your mind may see you as its.
