The Pegasus Series
Recurring dreams by Minnie Evans, before 1963, drawn 1973, '79, '80, '81.
Minnie Evans had dreams and visions from age four, but did no art until age 46 and was self-taught. Here, we have four pieces showing the evolution of a longtime resident of her dream-Eden: a pegasus. By the sixties she was already drawing him. Here's an example from 1973. He might be an alligator-pig-sheep with wings stitched on--and a huge eye at the joint.
The next, from 1979, is at least recognizably equine, but still has a rather canine head, and an expression implying either psychosis or taxidermy.
The third, from 1980, is distinctly more equine, natural... and relaxed. Glad to be in Eden.
The last, from 1981, is equally natural and happy, but much larger, despite the pressure of the central masked face. He holds his own, no longer a guest or pet.
When she painted the first version, Evans was 81 years old. By the fourth, she was 89. Still think you can't teach an old dog new tricks?
