Minnie Evans
"Minnie Evans was 43 years old when she began to draw pictures based on the strange dreams that had haunted her all her life: giant birds, biblical figures, intricate flowers, mysterious faces, and other fantastic images. And once she started drawing, nothing stopped her--not poverty, or the claim by her family and friends that she was "crazy", or her lack of training as an artist... [She] pursued her vision despite the restrictions placed on her as an African American woman."
Her decorative floral pieces are perhaps more popular, but what I've posted are the few pieces she or her biographers considered dream-based; some single, some series that show recurrent dream creatures. It's not always clear if a given piece is from a dream, when the dream was, and what happened. Toward the end of her very long life (1892-1987) she did go back and try to sign, date and label her art, but even she was often guessing.
The self-portrait at right was painted around age 89.
