Sunday Afternoon and Before Sleeping
Two surreal paintings (both 1980) by Leonor Fini
This was one of Fini's most popular paintings--made into a poster, in the eighties it hung all over Europe. The girl-dolls and their huge cats all sprawled together are sensual, but the fantasy charms instead of threatens (as in many of her paintings). Or at least the implied sex is kept... deniable.
But the sex is there. Here's a companion piece done the same year, Avant s'endormir (Before Sleeping). No one made this one into a poster to hang all over Europe. The girls still love to climb in the closet (so to speak), and lounge on the shelves like dolls... but what they do in there is no longer deniable.
