This is a hard topic for me to cover--not because the dreams I've personally had about the attack on the World Trade Center are so nightmarish, but because, though I had a dream or two predicting it (like Two Planes), I just haven't dreamed much of 9/11 since it happened. My feelings have been surprisingly subdued, too. And... a lot of those feelings are not popular. For example: al-Qaeda was correct to accuse the US of equal violence toward Muslims around the world. That doesn't justify attacking American civilians, but the list of Muslim civilians killed by American guns and bombs rivaled 9/11 even before the US attacked Afghanistan and Iraq:

• Libya, where US planes bombed civilians (an American court dismissed a lawsuit by a couple whose daughter was killed, calling it "frivolous.")
• Palestine, where our weapons and money are used to deny the civil rights of a whole people. Why do our tax dollars go to a government that discriminates on the basis of race and religion? If it was wrong to support South Africa's version of apartheid, why is it OK in Palestine now?
• Sudan (the US bombed a pharmaceutical plant--oops! Yeah, the Sudanese government is genocidal, and I'd shed no tears if the US declared war; that might save half a million southerners and Darfurians. But can't the Pentagon aim?)
• Iran (the US shot down an airliner, killing nearly 400 religious pilgrims--oops again),
• abetted warcrimes against Kurds in northern Iraq (US pilots were ordered to stand aside and let Saddam's planes strafe columns of fleeing refugees) and Shiites in US-occupied south Iraq (who under UN rules had a right to protection, but who we left to be crushed by Saddam's tanks)
• bombed Iraqi water, power and sewage plants, killing half a million over a decade from water-borne diseases (if spreading anthrax in the US is terrorism, what's spreading typhoid make us?)
• In Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and all over the region, our money and weapons support elites who suppress their own people. We're slowing democracy, not promoting it--and people resent it. That's what Al-Qaeda capitalizes on.

Mind you, I find all the fundamentalists equally repulsive--Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or Hindu. Wherever they've acquired power and influence, what results is discrimination, intimidation and violence.

But corporate capitalism's record isn't much cleaner. I'm afraid peaceful people round the world are caught between two equally brutal, self-righteous forces: capitalists and theocrats. Cold War II! 9/11 was just one shot... and despite American media fantasies, NOT the first shot.

Nor, I'm afraid, the last.

I'd say "A pox on both your houses!"... but smallpox spreads.
