TERRAFORMING

skip down to the dreams

Dreams of terraforming--turning sterile worlds into living ecologies. I dream regularly of such attempts--not surprising, since I have environmental illness, and many places designed by and for humans, from factories to offices to airports and malls, are uninhabitable for me. It's a dream of a world where I can live free.

But I think these dream-planets, these worlds of desert and ice that we struggle to make green, are also my own stressed-out body. Their thin biospheres are like my isolated, austere life...

There's a third interpretation of all these dreams of spreading life through the solar system and beyond: they're literal. I've had too many dreams, over the decades, that I've interpreted symbolically, only to find out they were predictions. Terraforming dreams are too long-term to test; but I think they're real, and we'll eventually do it.

Few things would tempt me into rebirth on a world like Earth... but I have to admit, I'd risk it to be a terraformer. Definitely a dream-job. I wonder if I'll get the chance.
