RED DIAPER BABIES

"Red Diaper Baby" is a phrase Josh Kornbluth coined for kids of radicals, who, at least here in America, grew up so different from the conservative capitalist mainstream that we basically constitute our own ethnic group! We know the same books, the same history censored in public schools, even the same songs... and of course the ideals. Self-sacrifice, serving others... being nobly poor. Or ignobly poor.

For me, the hardest legacy of being raised by idealists has been guilt--guilt I wasn't doing more for others, guilt that I wasn't... Gandhi!

And I'm not even sure Gandhi was Gandhi.
