Early this year, my dreams turned dark and strange, full of ghosts, paralysis, and death. In April my father abruptly went paralyzed, and in September he died. The shock of it made me start wondering what I wanted to make of MY life before the deadline arrives.
I started reading the journals I'd kept since my teens, and from those thirty thousand dreams, began building this site--partly as a tribute to my dad, who encouraged my dream-stories and art, but mainly just to have FINISHED something.
In summer, as I started typing up, editing, and illustrating this panorama of my entire dreamlife, my dreaming stopped. Oh, my REM didn't stop, but I woke with amnesia. All I had was the hazy feeling I should work on the website, not analyze any more dreams. I even dreamed that my dream-drought would be at least a year long, and was voluntary: I was sending my anima out into the astral plane as My Emissary, to change my contract with Life... and I wouldn't really be whole till she returned.
So I filled my days with work, and my nights with sleep, and forgot my dreams.
I lived, for the first time in my life, like an American.
