LARGE LIST--PATIENCE!

Silky is my spirit wife. When we met in dreams, years ago, she mostly appeared as a horse; we had adventures together, became friends and lovers, and eventually married in a dream. She's a shapeshifter, appearing in many forms, though she favors equines, cats, deer, and humans. Her species may vary with her whims, but some things are constant: black hair or black and white fur, Asian eyes, slender bodies, a quick, nervous but playful nature, sensuality, love of dance and singing, and a surface shyness hiding a fierce sense of fairness and empathy for underdogs. I love her dearly.

Jungians will think "anima" and worry I've surrendered to my unconscious. That's a bad idea in the Jungian scheme--letting your anima take over entirely can lead to moodiness and self-indulgence. But Silky's not a Jungian anima, a mood-creature capable only of dream-thinking and dream-guiding; she's as intelligent as my conscious mind (quite good with numbers, in fact), capable of self-restraint, though she requires a damn good reason to do it; and when I get in over my head in waking-world social transactions, she's taken over for me and saved the day.

She's also more fun at parties than most Jungians.

So... do I think of her as just part of myself or as a real, external spirit I've invited in? Am I possessed? Over the years of intimate body-sharing, the boundary between us has grown so porous that it's hard for me even to make sense of the question any more. Whatever we started out as, we're one hybrid soul now. In some of the following dreams I experience being Silky, first person.

There are problems, of course. It's hard for me to be among men doing Guy Things--the pecking order, the displays. Silky sees it as hilarious--or scary. I feel like an underground woman investigating this strange culture--and men sense it! Also, women dating me eventually notice there's a girl looking out my eyes. Luckily, Silky likes girls as much as boys, and isn't much prone to jealousy. Still it has to be disorienting to have your date keep changing gender on you! Plus, there are two of us to please, so we're picky...

But I haven't felt lonely or bored in years, years, years.

So... despite the traditional warnings in most cultures against dabbling with spirits, I recommend dating, mating with, and even marrying dream-beings... if you really like them. I mean, tradition usually condemns interfaith, interracial, and gay marriage, too. Ah, the wisdom of the ages!
